FirefoX RoX! here are some haX Part 1

Hi!

Remember how some folks complained that there’s no point in opening Firefox inside Firefox? 👿 Well, here’s a useful trick for you! 😀

You know what happens when you type a “word” into the Firefox address bar, right? Yep, it triggers a Google search for that “word.” For example, if you type “wordpress” in the address bar and hit Enter, Firefox will run a Google search for “wordpress.”

But what if you actually want to visit wordpress.com or wordpress.org? Here’s the trick!

First, open a new tab in Firefox by pressing Ctrl+T. Type “ANYTHING” in the address bar, then press Ctrl+Enter. It’ll automatically add http:// and .com taking you to http://www.ANYTHING.com.

If you press Shift+Enter, it’ll go to http://www.ANYTHING.net. And if you hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter, it’ll add http:// and .org, sending you to http://www.ANYTHING.org.

How cool is that? 😕 Okay, maybe not that cool, but I’m sure it’s handy!

Forbidden side of a web site-See what web sites hide from you

Hi!

It seems my previous Firefox trick (or hack) has gotten a bit famous, hasn’t it? Anyway, here’s another hack! man… am I turning into a life hacker or what? 🙄 This one’s a really curious thing to check out.

We all know what search engines do, right? Yes, search! Baby, search! They scour everywhere for everything. And what do website owners do? They use all sorts of SEO (search engine optimization) tricks to make things easier for search engines, so the SEs can crawl the directories inside their sites smoothly and bring more traffic! Hm… Okay, C.J., enough with the technical stuff! why are you telling us all this? Here’s why…

Did you know there are some directories on websites that owners don’t want the general public to see? Yep, there are! So, what do they do to hide them from us? They don’t exactly bribe the search engines 😀 nah! what they do is add a text file listing the directory names that should be skipped during searches. Search engines read that file first and leave those bits out of the search results page…

But you know us geeks can’t stay out of trouble, right? Yep! There’s a way to peek at those hidden directories! All you have to do is tack on /robots.txt after the domain name and see what the site owners don’t want you to find 😈

How about checking out what Mr. Bill Gates is hiding from us? 😀 Here you go:

http://www.microsoft.com/robots.txt

And what about Larry and Sergei? Yep!

http://www.google.com/robots.txt

Oh, and guys (and gals), you’d better not try this with WordPress.com, or our good old buddy Matt might kick me out of WP 8O. He’s a pretty open guy and probably doesn’t have much to hide :D, but why risk it? 😆

Our Manifesto!@#

Hi All!

It’s been a while… yeah, I know! No need to say that I’ve been “too” busy to update my blog. Anyway, I thought now is the perfect time to spend some time updating it. So, here I am, publishing something that wasn’t actually written by me. I’ve always wanted to share this but never had the chance. Here’s a clue: it’s a piece of literature that’s very much our type. “What on earth is that?” you might ask. Well, keep reading!

This is a classic article written by “The Mentor,” offering some insight into the mind of a computer hacker. It’s a well-known piece that can be found all over the Internet and is a staple on many “hacker” websites. Apparently, it first appeared in the hacker magazine =Phrack Inc.=, Volume One, Issue 7, Phile 3 of 10.

Another one got caught today, it’s all over the papers. “TeenagerArrested in Computer Crime Scandal”, “Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering”… Damn kids. They’re all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950’s technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder whatmade him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him? I am a hacker, enter my world… Mine is a world that begins with school… I’m smarter than most ofthe other kids, this crap they teach us bores me… Damn underachiever. They’re all alike.

I’m in junior high or high school. I’ve listened to teachers explainfor the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. “No, Ms.Smith, I didn’t show my work. I did it in my head…” Damn kid. Probably copied it. They’re all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this iscool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it’s because Iscrewed it up. Not because it doesn’t like me… Or feels threatened by me… Or thinks I’m a smart ass… Or doesn’t like teaching and shouldn’t be here… Damn kid. All he does is play games. They’re all alike.

And then it happened… a door opened to a world… rushing throughthe phone line like heroin through an addict’s veins, an electronic pulse issent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought… a board isfound. “This is it… this is where I belong…” I know everyone here… even if I’ve never met them, never talked tothem, may never hear from them again… I know you all… Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They’re all alike…

You bet your ass we’re all alike… we’ve been spoon-fed baby food atschool when we hungered for steak… the bits of meat that you did let slipthrough were pre-chewed and tasteless. We’ve been dominated by sadists, orignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will-ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now… the world of the electron and the switch, thebeauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without payingfor what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn’t run by profiteering gluttons, andyou call us criminals. We explore… and you call us criminals. We seekafter knowledge… and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias… and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to usand try to make us believe it’s for our own good, yet we’re the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime isthat of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive mefor.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can’t stop us all… after all, we’re all alike.

Anyway, you know what the funniest thing is? This manifesto is copyrighted by some ahole who works at a law school. I came across this online while surfing and got sooo angry at this pathetic professor, “ANE SUSAANO.” 😀

How can someone claim ownership of something like this? Seriously.

Back to the topic, though.

Our friend “The Mentor” got busted a few days after writing this, but his words still live on. It’s going to take a long time for the LAW (or LOW :D) guys to erase this from their imaginary “secure world.” After all, “They can’t stop us all!” 😀

Bloging made easy with Firefox!

Hello Firefox lovers! Here’s some great news for you guys (or gals). Remember I told you about “Flock” in my post “Life Made Easy with Flock”? Well, this time I found an extension for Firefox that lets you post to your blog!

Actually, my good old buddy Chanux is the one who introduced it to me. It’s called “Performancing.” For me, it seems far better than the blog posting tool that comes with “Flock” because previous posts can be easily edited with this… and there’s much more!

Why don’t you guys give it a try?

Emulate with QEMU!

The first day I met Ven. Ilgo (my Linux guru), the venerable thero showed me a magic trick (it was that surprising for me at the time) with his Linux-installed laptop by booting “Windows XP” within a window of his Debian Linux installation. Although we could see it in a window, “Windows XP” seemed to act as if it were the only OS running at that moment. He had even installed Firefox and a Python interpreter.

“First, I used this to make my machine useful to another monk who refused to work with Linux because he was a great fan of MS Word macros. But now I use QEMU to check how well my Python scripts work in Windows,” said Ven. Ilgo.

After a few minutes in “Windows,” we were shutting down WinXP. Guess what? Windows crashed!

“This is a joke! I can’t believe how people use this in their day-to-day life,” said Ven. Ilgo.

“Maybe it’s because of the emulation?” I replied.

“Oh no. It’s true that QEMU might be slower than a normal Windows installation, but not when KQEMU is installed with 1GB of RAM. At least it’s fast enough not to crash,” said the venerable thero. (KQEMU is a driver that allows the QEMU PC emulator to run much faster when emulating a PC.)

“What if we just close this window without shutting down Windows?” I asked.

“Then Windows will assume it’s a power loss and run ‘the famous disk scan!’”

That was enough for me that day, but it wasn’t enough for me later. So, I started using QEMU after getting a good tutorial from Ven. Ilgo. I always wanted to write a post about this but couldn’t do it earlier because of my lack of free time. Here it is now!

(Important: This is not a QEMU man page. This is just a simple intro to QEMU.)
(Disclaimer: I’M NOT GUILTY IF YOU GET BUSTED OR KICKED OUT OF “LKLUG” FOR USING ‘Windows’ WITH THIS EMULATOR.) D

First, we need to install QEMU:

apt-get install qemu

Once QEMU is installed, try typing qemu to check whether it’s up and running.

I assume you guys (or gals) are going to emulate Windows. Normally, Windows will need 2GB of disk space, so let’s create an image file that will act as an HDD during the emulation:

qemu-img create win.img 2048mb

Yes! You can change the name or file size as you like.

Next, create an ISO image of a CD containing Windows XP. You can do this by selecting the “Copy to Disk Image” option, which appears after right-clicking the CD icon. Name the file “winXP.iso.”

Now, to boot your emulated PC from the CD, type:

qemu -hda win.img -cdrom /path/to/winXP.iso -boot d

Make sure to replace /path/to/winXP.iso with the correct path to your ISO file.

A window resembling a normal BIOS will open. From there, proceed as you normally would during a Windows setup.

After installing, you’ll need to boot from the HDD. Type:

qemu -hda win.img -cdrom /path/to/ANY.iso -boot c

If you want to install software or drivers in Windows, simply create an ISO image containing the software and replace /path/to/ANY.iso with the correct path and name of the ISO image.

For further information, check the QEMU manual (man qemu). You can also use a SAMBA server to transfer files between Linux and Windows, though I’m not sure if it supports Windows XP.

Oh! For those of you wondering… Yes! you can use QEMU to emulate another Linux distro too. After all, why emulate just to be a fool?

Digg this post!

Life made easy with Flock

Hi guys! I’m typing this post with the help of an open-source browser called Flock. It seems interesting because this browser has a built-in blog posting tool that supports not only WordPress but also Typepad, Movable Type, MetaWeblog, Blogger, and Atom. The next best thing is that this browser uses the source code of our good old buddy, Firefox! It looks like Firefox with a new color scheme and some extensions installed.

I’m planning to keep this browser handy for my blog posting, but Firefox is going to stay with me for a loooong time because I’m still using it for browsing. I think the Firefox team should be careful with this competing “twin brother.”

Oh! And for those of you who are interested in my results, check out the comments on my last post. 😉
