Friday night Gadget : Swiss Beat MP3

Friday Night Gadget by SeeJay will be featured every Friday evening on CyberCapital.org. Since this is our very first episode in the very first week, I’ll give you a quick intro to the scene.

Friday Night Gadget will simply introduce you to a new gadget every week. Our goal is to focus on more affordable gadgets that won’t break the bank for readers. We’re not pushing you toward any online stores to buy them. We figure our readers are smart enough to Google a good deal themselves! ~SeeJay

OK, guys, here it is…

After the last couple of posts I published here, someone (guess who?) found my humble writings 😉 interesting enough to read and offered me a new gig. Guess what? Now I’m the Editor of the upcoming C…C…DOTorg! Whooo hooo! …Oops, gotta behave myself now 😀 Anyway, I’m sorry, but I won’t reveal the site URL yet… it’s a surprise! Hopefully, I’ll share it in my next post. I think you guys can now see why I was so busy last week. I had to give it my all because we at C.C.org want to bring you the best. So, what’s so special about CC.org, you might ask?

Nothing special, except it’s being updated (daily, hopefully!) by a bunch of tech geeks who’d rather sit in front of their computers than do anything else, even during breakfast, lunch, or dinner 😀 But I’m sure these guys (myself included) will make sure you get the best from the web.

So, I think I’ve given you enough excuses for my sudden disappearance, and I’ve got to get back to work now because there’s a ton to do! Oh, did you notice? I didn’t even have time to caption my last post, but thanks to my blogging tool Performancing, it got auto-named “post1” 😀

Hi Guys!

I’m sorry I couldn’t bring you any new stuff last week, but I’ve got a good excuse for that! 😀 Guess what? I’m working on something new, something really fresh and full of spirit! I’ve got a lot to tell you… but I’m super busy right now. I’ll fill you in on everything within a few hours, and that’s a promise!

FirefoX RoX! here are some haX Part 1

Hi!

Remember how some folks complained that there’s no point in opening Firefox inside Firefox? 👿 Well, here’s a useful trick for you! 😀

You know what happens when you type a “word” into the Firefox address bar, right? Yep, it triggers a Google search for that “word.” For example, if you type “wordpress” in the address bar and hit Enter, Firefox will run a Google search for “wordpress.”

But what if you actually want to visit wordpress.com or wordpress.org? Here’s the trick!

First, open a new tab in Firefox by pressing Ctrl+T. Type “ANYTHING” in the address bar, then press Ctrl+Enter. It’ll automatically add http:// and .com taking you to http://www.ANYTHING.com.

If you press Shift+Enter, it’ll go to http://www.ANYTHING.net. And if you hit Ctrl+Shift+Enter, it’ll add http:// and .org, sending you to http://www.ANYTHING.org.

How cool is that? 😕 Okay, maybe not that cool, but I’m sure it’s handy!

Forbidden side of a web site-See what web sites hide from you

Hi!

It seems my previous Firefox trick (or hack) has gotten a bit famous, hasn’t it? Anyway, here’s another hack! man… am I turning into a life hacker or what? 🙄 This one’s a really curious thing to check out.

We all know what search engines do, right? Yes, search! Baby, search! They scour everywhere for everything. And what do website owners do? They use all sorts of SEO (search engine optimization) tricks to make things easier for search engines, so the SEs can crawl the directories inside their sites smoothly and bring more traffic! Hm… Okay, C.J., enough with the technical stuff! why are you telling us all this? Here’s why…

Did you know there are some directories on websites that owners don’t want the general public to see? Yep, there are! So, what do they do to hide them from us? They don’t exactly bribe the search engines 😀 nah! what they do is add a text file listing the directory names that should be skipped during searches. Search engines read that file first and leave those bits out of the search results page…

But you know us geeks can’t stay out of trouble, right? Yep! There’s a way to peek at those hidden directories! All you have to do is tack on /robots.txt after the domain name and see what the site owners don’t want you to find 😈

How about checking out what Mr. Bill Gates is hiding from us? 😀 Here you go:

http://www.microsoft.com/robots.txt

And what about Larry and Sergei? Yep!

http://www.google.com/robots.txt

Oh, and guys (and gals), you’d better not try this with WordPress.com, or our good old buddy Matt might kick me out of WP 8O. He’s a pretty open guy and probably doesn’t have much to hide :D, but why risk it? 😆

Sri lanka Invaded the blogging world yesterday!

Please don’t think I’ve got a big ego, guys. But I’m soooo happy because of my blog stats! When I’m posting this, I’ve got 70,705 hits on my blog (check the top left-hand corner). Not bad for a humble Sri Lankan blogger, huh? My blog was the “Blog of the Minute” on WordPress.com for hours! That means it was the hottest blog around at the time. Believe me, buddies, it rocks!!! I’m still on the WordPress.com homepage under “Today’s Hot Blogs”. Oh, and I almost forgot to tell you guys, I hit the number 1 spot on Digg.com’s Top 10 😀 yesterday!

Yes, I’m thrilled to have stats like these. I was a bit lazy about posting blog entries in the past, but a few days ago, I started posting again with fresh energy! I’m glad I did. I’m really thankful to the guys (and gals) who commented on my last post, and to all the other blog viewers. I’ll do my best to keep this blogging spirit alive. So, guys, watch out for some quality content!

C.J.

P.S.: Oh! And I was wondering, are there any Sri Lankan bloggers who’ve hit 50,000 or 100,000 stats? Or maybe some who’ve gone even higher? 🙄

Our Manifesto!@#

Hi All!

It’s been a while… yeah, I know! No need to say that I’ve been “too” busy to update my blog. Anyway, I thought now is the perfect time to spend some time updating it. So, here I am, publishing something that wasn’t actually written by me. I’ve always wanted to share this but never had the chance. Here’s a clue: it’s a piece of literature that’s very much our type. “What on earth is that?” you might ask. Well, keep reading!

This is a classic article written by “The Mentor,” offering some insight into the mind of a computer hacker. It’s a well-known piece that can be found all over the Internet and is a staple on many “hacker” websites. Apparently, it first appeared in the hacker magazine =Phrack Inc.=, Volume One, Issue 7, Phile 3 of 10.

Another one got caught today, it’s all over the papers. “TeenagerArrested in Computer Crime Scandal”, “Hacker Arrested after Bank Tampering”… Damn kids. They’re all alike.

But did you, in your three-piece psychology and 1950’s technobrain, ever take a look behind the eyes of the hacker? Did you ever wonder whatmade him tick, what forces shaped him, what may have molded him? I am a hacker, enter my world… Mine is a world that begins with school… I’m smarter than most ofthe other kids, this crap they teach us bores me… Damn underachiever. They’re all alike.

I’m in junior high or high school. I’ve listened to teachers explainfor the fifteenth time how to reduce a fraction. I understand it. “No, Ms.Smith, I didn’t show my work. I did it in my head…” Damn kid. Probably copied it. They’re all alike.

I made a discovery today. I found a computer. Wait a second, this iscool. It does what I want it to. If it makes a mistake, it’s because Iscrewed it up. Not because it doesn’t like me… Or feels threatened by me… Or thinks I’m a smart ass… Or doesn’t like teaching and shouldn’t be here… Damn kid. All he does is play games. They’re all alike.

And then it happened… a door opened to a world… rushing throughthe phone line like heroin through an addict’s veins, an electronic pulse issent out, a refuge from the day-to-day incompetencies is sought… a board isfound. “This is it… this is where I belong…” I know everyone here… even if I’ve never met them, never talked tothem, may never hear from them again… I know you all… Damn kid. Tying up the phone line again. They’re all alike…

You bet your ass we’re all alike… we’ve been spoon-fed baby food atschool when we hungered for steak… the bits of meat that you did let slipthrough were pre-chewed and tasteless. We’ve been dominated by sadists, orignored by the apathetic. The few that had something to teach found us will-ing pupils, but those few are like drops of water in the desert.

This is our world now… the world of the electron and the switch, thebeauty of the baud. We make use of a service already existing without payingfor what could be dirt-cheap if it wasn’t run by profiteering gluttons, andyou call us criminals. We explore… and you call us criminals. We seekafter knowledge… and you call us criminals. We exist without skin color, without nationality, without religious bias… and you call us criminals. You build atomic bombs, you wage wars, you murder, cheat, and lie to usand try to make us believe it’s for our own good, yet we’re the criminals.

Yes, I am a criminal. My crime is that of curiosity. My crime isthat of judging people by what they say and think, not what they look like.My crime is that of outsmarting you, something that you will never forgive mefor.

I am a hacker, and this is my manifesto. You may stop this individual, but you can’t stop us all… after all, we’re all alike.

Anyway, you know what the funniest thing is? This manifesto is copyrighted by some ahole who works at a law school. I came across this online while surfing and got sooo angry at this pathetic professor, “ANE SUSAANO.” 😀

How can someone claim ownership of something like this? Seriously.

Back to the topic, though.

Our friend “The Mentor” got busted a few days after writing this, but his words still live on. It’s going to take a long time for the LAW (or LOW :D) guys to erase this from their imaginary “secure world.” After all, “They can’t stop us all!” 😀

At last!

At last!
I’ve finally gotten myself into blogging. Ever since I entered the cyber world, I’ve been really good at reading blogs, but I never had one of my own. Even though there were lots of things happening in my crazy life, my busy lifestyle left me with no time to maintain a blog. Not that I was too lazy to post things 😉 I just never got around to it. But now, here I am, ready to share my life experiences with everyone.

I’m not planning to shout out a loud introduction about myself at this moment. I’ll let time introduce me as it flows. For now, all I’ll say is that I’m a 20-year-old guy who loves to live life free and cool. Not “free” as in free beer, nor “free” as in free software 🙂 Although I love FOSS, I absolutely hate it when people try to modify my “life source code.” It drives me nuts when that happens, and it’s definitely not good for those who try!

The reason I’m not introducing myself properly right now is, as usual, my lack of free time. And to make things worse, there are some special events coming up. Since “Free Software Day” is on the 16th of September, my worst best friend ChanuX and I, along with “Asa ha Naya” (check how it’s spelled), are planning to head to Colombo to join the LKLUG guys and spread the word of “freedom” across the mountains of our beautiful island. Our Linux guru, Ven. Ilgo, is planning to visit Peradeniya University to meet another monk and switch him to FOSS. So, ChanuX and I decided to use those free days to have some fun and meet other Sri Lankan FOSS users to see what’s happening outside our (cyber) world. Asanka and Nayomal (yes, you guessed it… Asahanaya!) also promised to join us, as they’re always happy to tag along.

Now, I’ve got to stop typing and head out into the real world to buy some essentials for our journey. I have a feeling the next few days will make me work like “Speedy Gonzales” because there’s so much to do in such a short time. I’ll try to post an update with the latest info as soon as possible. Until then, adios!

C.J.
(P.S. I couldn’t post this earlier because I had issues with my internet connection. So, I’m posting this on Sunday evening after finishing our journey to Colombo. Check out my next post to hear all about it!)
